Development Education Summer School 2007, 26. 6. - 2. 7. 2007, Častá Papiernička, Slovakia
International Development Education Summer School (DESS) is an interactive educational course for people who, in their professional lives, come across the topic of development assistance and especially education. DESS has been organized since 1997 in one of the EU countries. In 2007 it was, for the first time in history, organized by one of the new member states of EU.
Representatives of European network of non-governmental organizations for assistance and development (CONCORD), as well as of the project Exchange of Experience in the area of Development Education in Europe (DEEEP) chose as a hosting country Slovakia for year 2007. Slovak Platform of Non-governmental Development Organizations (PMVRO) was invited to organize the whole event. Summer School is financed annually by the European Commission and co-financed by national sources for development assistance- in the case of Slovakia Slovak Aid-. Development School is traditionally focusing on development education which supports the involvement of all people in fight against poverty and unfair conditions of developing countries and is trying to change the situation through observation economical, social, environmental and human rights regulations in national and international politics.
Previous years of the event were focusing on one of the major groups: politicians, decision- makers, media, teachers and academics. Development School in Slovakia was unique because it was trying to involve all chosen target groups into a discussion in the context of Millennium Development Goals. Main topic of the event was: “Achievement of Millennium Development Goals: role of development education.”
The reason for choosing this topic was the fact that in the year 2007 the “half-time” for fulfillment of 8 Millennium Development Goals (Millennium Development Goals – MDGs) has expired, however at the current rate their fulfillment will not be possible sooner then in 2015, as it was approved at the Millennium Summit in 2000. Due to this reason, it was necessary to engage general public as well as all target groups.
Due to the Summer School of Development Education, more than hundred representatives from different professional (representatives from non-governmental sector, media, students, lecturers, business sector etc.) and also geographical (EU states, participants from “global south) backgrounds were able to participate not only the in the process of exchange of experience but also in the process of preparation of new strategies and methodology which could actively help in fulfillment of Millennium Development Goals globally. English was the communication language during the School.
