About the project

A 3 year project (February 2008 - January 2011) seeks to strengthen the role of Central European countries within the context of European development aid and international politics. The second goal is to engage the public with issues about the developing world and stimulate debate on development cooperation. This new project is spearheaded by the Czech NGO People in Need along with four other organizations from new EU member states and the European Journalism Centre.

Reasons for the project implementation:

  • Support development cooporation of new EU Member States still below the level of other member countries.
  • Most politicians and journalists from Central Europe lacks personal experience with, what means the extreme poverty in the developing world and how a development project looks in reality. As is often never met the recipients of development aid, lack the personal motivation to deal with these issues.
  • The media do not provide sufficient space to create social pressure on the political elite for the provision of transparent information on the use of public funds for development cooperation.
  • Students do not have enough technical information and support in order to process the academic subject of development assistance.

Mission of project:

The main objective of the three-year project, "To act you have to know" is to strengthen the role of central European countries (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary) in the European development policy and opening public debate on the developing world and development cooperation. The mission of this project is to involve the general public, politicians and journalists in a discussion of the need for development aid and cooperation. Increasing the competence and motivation of politicians and university students for the future of the invaluable contribution in improving the quality and quantity of development assistance. The international dimension is an invaluable contribution in terms of creating a common platform for the exchange of experiences as well as efficient and successful models of development experience between member countries of the project.

The project is coordinated by the Czech organization "People in Need", in collaboration with four other organizations of the European Union:

  • The Foundation for the Development of Democratic Rights (Foundation of Development of Democratic Rights DemNet), Hungary
  • Partners for Democratic Change (PDCS), Slovak Republic
  • Platform governmental development organizations (PMVRO), Slovak Republic
  • European center of journalism (European Journalism Center) - an organization focusing on education of journalists, the Netherlands
The project is funded by the European Commission.
