Characteristics of the organization: The Foundation to support civic activism (NPOA) was established within the framework of the European Union program PHARE. During 1993 – 2003 NPOA fulfilled the role of an implementation unit of PHARE of the European Commission for nongovernmental organizations in Slovakia. Through grant allocation to a wide variety of Slovak nongovernmental organizations, NPOA has contributed to the development of civil society, democracy and European values in Slovakia prior to our entry into the European Union. During the ten years in its role as an implementation agency of PHARE it has supported more than 1400 projects worth more than 11 000 000 EUR from the funds made available by the EU. With the entry of Slovakia into the EU, NPOA ended its function as an implementation agency for the resources of PHARE. Since 2004, NPOA acts as an administrator of official financial aid designated to Serbia and Montenegro. In its role as administrator of the Bratislava- Belgrade Fund, NPOA gained the opportunity to transfer its know-how to building and strengthening civil society outside the borders of Slovakia. At the same time, it has extended its realm of action from a purely nongovernmental sector to private and public sector.
