Characteristics of the organization: 
Slovak Red Cross is a nongovernmental legal entity established by NR SR c. 84/1994 Z. z. Act. Slovak Red Cross is a nonprofit organization and is part of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. It is a member of the International Federation of National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. In its activity, Slovak Red Cross upholds the principles of the ICRC: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, volunteerism, unity and universality.

Activities:
• helps people in need and prevents situation of need
• acts as an explicitly recognized assistant organization of the military health unit and is exclusively entitled to prepare and carry out assistant military health service
• organizes optional first aid instruction courses at primary and secondary schools; first aid courses for adults; acts as a guarantor of first aid courses as part of driving instructions; conducts registration of the network of rescue teams
• organizes voluntary blood donations; rewards donors with Jánsky’s plaquette; has a mobile unit for blood donations and vehicles suitable for transportation of blood and its derivatives; announces particular national blood donation events such as: People for People; Student Blood Drop; Valentine’s Blood Drop etc.
• provides social services such as: care taking and transportation service; food provision; care taking services in residential homes for older citizens and citizens with physical, mental or combined disabilities, in homes for single parents, victims of domestic violence and for citizens who have lost their home and are in material need, homeless people, migrants and asylum seekers
• acts in the realm of civil security and protection and provides aid in catastrophic situations, natural disasters, extraordinary events or other situations of distress
• organizes and administers aid during catastrophes and emergency situations in regions affected outside of the territory of the Slovak Republic
• Slovak Red Cross Youth organizes education and prevention programs particularly focused on children and youth 
• humanitarian aid of Slovak Red Cross responds to current needs of citizens both in the Slovak Republic and in other countries
• educates citizens about the basic principles of international humanitarian law; spreads ideals of peace, mutual respect and understanding among people and nations
• the tracing service of Slovak Red Cross acts in the spirit of Geneva Conventions and seeks to assuage the psychological suffering of those affected by war or other critical events; it searches for misplaced people and reconnects families. It provides information about stays in concentration camps or labor camps for citizens of the Slovak Republic. It also delivers family messages to places where ordinary postal service is not possible.
• water rescue service of the Slovak Red Cross trains life guards for open air pools, inside pools; it provides general rescue services of the Slovak Red Cross
• fulfills other roles if so asked by the government of the Slovak Republic
